FAIRLEA – Sencere Fields ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as Bluefield knocked off Greenbrier East 34-19 Monday night in a game that was suspended by lightening Friday.
It was the first win of the season for Bluefield.
The Beavers led 20-19 when the game was suspended with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter.
When it resumed Greenbrier East couldn’t convert on a third-and-16 at the Bluefield 17. When the Beavers got the ball back and culminated a drive with a 34-yad pass from Fields to R.J. Hairston. It was their second touchdown hookup of the game. The duo combined on a 75-yard strike on Friday in the second quarter, Bluefield’s first touchdown pass of the season.
That was the second big play in that quarter that got the Beavers the lead they held when it was suspended.
Greenbrier East took a 19-6 lead as Greenbrier East quarterback sandwiched a pair of touchdown passes – 54 yards to Nate Suttle and 32 yards to Kaden Stone – around a 3-yard touchdown run.
But Josiah Campbell had a 75-yard kickoff after the touchdown pass to Stone and then Hairston’s 75 pitch-and-catch from Fields helped give East the lead.
Late in the game Fields added a touchdown run.
Fields finished the night with 75 yards rushing and 154 passing. RJ Fields caught all five of the Beavers passes for 154 yards.
Brody Hamric threw for 170 yards and Nathan Suttle rushed for 33 yards and caught three passes for the 65 yards.
Greenbrier East (0-3) is at home Friday hosting Alleghany, Va. and Bluefield hosts Woodrow Wilson Saturday at 1 p.m.
