Greenbrier East 65, Oak Hill 58

Greenbrier East outscored Oak Hill 31-13 in the fourth to overcome an 11-point fourth quarter deficit and win a key sectional game Tuesday at the Lilly Center.

Brody Hamric scored six straight to lead the comeback, including the go-ahead basket with 1:26 remaining, ahead of a three-point play by Gabe Patton with 1:01 remaining.

Oak Hill had overcome a 25-23 halftime deficit with its now 9-0 run and led by as many as 13 in the third quarter.

“I challenged the kids, I told them, ‘Hey, they took the third quarter, it’s our turn,’” Greenbrier East coach Jared Patton said. “We can either lay down and take the loss or we can fight to the end.’ And that’s what they decided to do. We started executing the way we wanted to in the fourth. We got a little stagnant in the third. We got a little stagnant in the second. But we keep changing lineups and waiting for the right lineup to get together and we found it there in the fourth quarter. It might not be the same next game, but those kids played great together.”

The loss was disappointing for Oak Hill coach Benitez Jackson.
“I thought we kind of backed down,” Jackson said. “I thought we had guys out on the court backing down from the physicality and toughness they were bringing. (Greenbrier East) always plays hard and tough and physical and I don’t think we matched that in the fourth quarter. I give Greenbrier East all the credit They took it from us.”
Brody Hamric, Reed McGraw, and Nathan Dixon had 13 points each and Gabe Patton. 11 for East, which improved to 1-1 with the win.
Oak Hill’s Malachi Lewis led all scorers with 20 points. Levi Kiszka had 11 and Trevor Kelly 10 for the Red Devils, now 1-2.
