NEW RICHMOND – The Warriors checked all the boxes in Ryan Davidson’s debut as the Warriors coach.

A relentless pressure defense led to points in the offensive end and the Warriors got 25 points from Cadee Blackburn and 11 from Maddie Clark in a 56-40 season-opening win against PikeView.

Ryan Davidson was victorious in his debut as the Wyoming East girls coach Monday with a 56-40 win against PikeView.

“We want to play with pace, that’s what we are,” Davidson said. “So, it’s one of those things, let’s just be what we are and try to be better at it each time out. But we are always going to try to play with pace and pressure and try to make teams play faster than they want to play.”

It’s long been the receipt for the Warriors and it once again provided a difference on opening night.

Just ask PikeView coach Tracy Raban, whose team was harassed into 26 turnovers. Compounded matters was losing Jocelyn Hall early with an injury. The Warriors lost Abbi Baker on the play, which happened under the Warriors basket and left both girls hitting the floor hard.

“Their defensive pressure was relentless,” Raban said. “We struggled handling the pressure. You can’t do that against a team like Wyoming East. I thought we fought back a little in the fourth quarter. Losing Jocelyn hurt us there with ball-handling, but we didn’t do much to help ourselves out.”

Two separate runs, a 10-0 run between the first quarter and the second and 17-4 over the last four minutes of the first half left. Warriors up 31-15 at the half.

Blackburn had 15 points at the half.

It was a bit of an emotional night for Davidson, who took over for the highly successful Angie Boninsegna who retired after Lady Warriors state championship victory against Summers County last season.

“At one point I started thinking about my dad and my father-in-law (the late Richard Davidson and Shawn Spears),” Davidson said. “And that was… I had to kind of get it together. That was the only thing that kind of got me.”

Hailey Justice had 11 for PikeView.
