James Monroe 45, Wheeling Central 32
WHEELING – James Monroe rolled up 441 yards rushing and had 541 overall and trailed only once in the contest, 7-6 before scoring three straight touchdowns to open it up in a big win between a pair of Top 5 Class A teams.
Cooper Ridgeway, an all-state offensive utility selection a year ago, was at in again rushing for 148 yards on 22 carries with three touchdowns and he added 64 receiving yards.
Quarterback Layton Dowdy completed 7 of 9 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and he ran for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Chaz Boggs had a touchdown rushing and a touchdown receiving.
The James Monroe defense limited Central to just 93 yards rushing The Knights’ junior quarterback Seth Cover dod throw for 265 yards and three touchdowns in the contest.
Greenbrier West 41, Pendleton County 7
CHARMCO – Greenbrier West kicked off the Kelly Vaughan Era with a convincing victory Friday night.
After falling behind 7-0, the Cavs rolled off 41 straight.
Quarterback Cole Vandall threw for 115 yards, completing 10 of 7 passes with two touchdowns, a 31 yarder to Isaac Agee and a five yarder to Tucker Lilly.
Moses Gray had two rushing touchdowns, and Jake Pate (71 yards) and Colton Chrisman each had rushing touchdowns.
The Cavaliers had 10 players log carries in the game.
Greenbrier West (1-0) goes to Summers County next week.
Oak Hill 14, Nicholas County 10
OAK HILL – J.D. Mauritz scored on a four-yard run with 3:29 remaining to give Oak Hill a come-from-behind win in the debut of Davon Marion as the Red Devils coach.
A Johan Villasenor 37-yard field goal in the first quarter gave Nicholas a 3-0 lead at the half.
Coltin Browning had a 39-yard run to give the Grizzlies a 10-0 lead but Oak Hill got on the board with a five-yard James Green run near the end of the third to make it 10-7.
Nicholas had a chance to extend the lead, but a David Spalding interception the end zone ended that threat.
Oak Hill outgained the Grizzlies 324-211.
Westside 60, Wyoming East 6
NEW RICHMOND – Kadien Vance ran for 115 yard and three touchdowns and threw for 128 and another score as the Renegades rode roughshod over rival Wyoming East to retain the Golden Shovel.
It’s the second year in a row that Vance had over 100 rushing and passing against Wyoming East.
Brody Cline added 86 yards and two touchdowns for Westside, which had 233 rushing yards and had 361 yards total offense.
Parker Lambert and Ethan Walls had fumble recoveries for touchdowns.
The 60 points is the most the Renegades have scored since scoring 62 on River View in 2017 and it is the most Westside has scored in the 22 meeting with its Wyoming County rival.
Woodrow Wilson 38, Riverside 13
Last year Woodrow had a stable of backs. Those horses have left the barn, but the new group has picked up where they left off.
Woodrow had 10 different backs get at least three carries and amassed 365 yards on the ground in the opening victory.
Four players had a rushing touchdown including Elijah Waller, Christian Stewart, Konnor Ray and Jacob Reeves.
Waller electrified the crowd by returning the opening kickoff 88 yards for a score. Riverside also had a kickoff for a touchdown near the end of the first half that made the halftime score 26-7.
Woodrow Wilson’s defense also held the Warriors to just 98 yards of total offense in the game.
Midland Trail 22, Clay County 14
Jayden Roop carried 21 times for 132 yards and three touchdowns as the Patriots avenged a loss in the season opener a year ago.
Jaden Gladwell was 6 of 10 through the air for 125 yards.
Will McGraw led the defense with 10 tackles, two tackles for a loss two passes deflected and an interception. Landon Syner, who picked off a pass for an interception against Clay last year, had another interception this season.
Meadow Bridge 24, Van 12
The return of the Power I was a success.
Meadow Bridge’s Kaiden Sims rushed for 106 yard and a touchdown to lead the Wildcats to a season-opening victory. Trip Roles and quarterback Brayden Thomas also ran for touchdown as Meadow Bridge rolled to 270 yards rushing on the ground.
Sims also had 10 tackles on defense and Roles and Sims each had an interception in the game.
Roane County 35, Shady Spring 20
Shady Spring had a hard time moving the ball on the ground in a loss to Roane County Friday in the season opener for both schools.
Brady Green did throw for 144 yards and a touchdown (26 yards to Josiah Mckoy) and Cal Culicerto threw a 27 yarder to Andrew Baker.
Gavin Davis added a rushing touchdown for the Tigers.
Point Pleasant 26, Greenbrier East 7
Greenbrier East led 7-6 at the half thanks to a Carter Hamilton 3-yard run.
But homestanding Point Pleasant out score the Spartans 20-0 in the second half to claim the victory.
Sophomore quarterback Brody Hamric was 9 of 20 passing in the game for 127 yards.
Greenbrier East (0-1) is at Woodrow Wilson in a battle of ancient adversaries.
